Educated to postgraduate level in Modern Languages (French and German), Andrea worked as Translator/Interpreter for 6 years before having her son, who is now a lecturer in Law. After a short career break she moved into education administration, and worked as Information and Advice Centre Manager and International Recruitment Manager in 3 colleges before starting at Aston in 2009. Andrea's first role here was as International Student Adviser for 2 years, before taking up her current post in the Advice and Representation Centre in March 2012.
Qualified in Advice and Guidance as well as Customer Service, she has a wealth of experience from 30 years in UK education. Andrea has served her community for 5 years as a Justice of the Peace. Her education and professional occupation have taken Andrea to 27 countries, from the Far East and Central Asia, to Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
When she is not working, Andrea is generally to be found in her garden or allotment, where she and her husband grow fruit and vegetables organically – and she enjoys cooking them as well! Andrea's other main interests are reading, usually with one or two of her 8 cats on her lap, and local history, especially of the Black Country, where she lives.
Mary has a BA (Hons) in Sociology, and has extensive experience working with people. She has worked for Citizen Advice Bureaux for 20 years before joining the ARC team. She has had lots of training in all areas of advice work, and she has also worked on social policy issues highlighting areas of concern throughout our society.
Mary is married and has three grown up children who she says have given her insight into the problems faced by young people today. She also loves animals and is presently caring for 2 dogs, Ruby and Oliver. She enjoys socialising with friends and is always willing to join in social activities. She often joins friends on long walks in her free time.
Advice Receptionist & Administration Assistant
Anne has a BA Hons degree in History from York University and considerable reception and administration experience gained in the wider business world. She has also seen her three adult children graduate from various UK universities and understands all the pitfalls and benefits of university life.
She is a local lady, proud of her connections to the area and the Black Country in particular. She has recently developed an interest in researching her family history and has discovered that most of her ancestors were involved in the local trades of nail making and chain making.
Anne has maintained a lifelong interest in history and the arts. In her spare time she loves reading and going to the theatre, museums, and exhibitions. She also loves watching major sporting events such as the Olympics and Wimbledon but sadly, is not at all sporty herself.
