Membership of the Union

Full Student Members

All students at Aston University are members of Aston Students' Union, unless they choose to opt out. On enrolment students are asked if they wish to be a member of the students' union. If students initially opt out of membership, it is possible to join by emailing the Union President.

This membership entitles members to use of the building, facilities, clubs and societies, representation and all other services provided by Aston Students' Union.

Students are also able to entertain up to two guests on any one day to also may use of the Union building. Guests must be registered with the Union Reception or upon entry to a night-time event.

Reciprocal Members

From time to time, Aston Students' Union can make arrangements with other educational institutions to allow their students to have have a form of membership. This might be when the other educational institution has a campus that is closer to Aston Students' Union than their students' union, or if they do not have a students' union. All reciprocal agreements must be agreed by Union Council.

Reciprocal Members are entitled to make use of the building, the vehicle fleet and the franchises.

Associate Members

Associate Membership of Aston Students' Union can be granted to any other groups not previously mentioned. This can be dependent on a membership fee, if the Union wish to charge one, or can be granted for free. Associate Members currently include Aston Students' Union staff, Aston University staff, carers of students and members of the Aston Graduate Association. New associate membership agreements must be agreed by Union Council.

Associate Members are able to join sports clubs and societies at the same cost for other members, speak at Union Council, and make use of the building, the vehicle fleet and the franchises.

honorary life members

Honorary Life Membership (HLM) is the highest award the Students' Union can award someone for their service and contribution to Aston Students' Union.

Anyone can be nominated for a HLM award, with nominations available from the Union President. Completed forms, signed by the relevant number of students (14) and submitted back to the Union President for approval by the Executive Committee.

Approved submissions will go to a vote at Union Council with the backing of the Executive. Rejected submissions still have the right to go to Union Council, but without the backing of the Union Executive. Upon approval by Union Council, Honorary Life Membership will become active 48 hours post-vote or upon graduation if still a student.

Honorary Life Members are entitled to attend Union Council, join sports clubs and societies (although cannot compete in BUCS), make use of the building and services, and are entitled to updates on the state of the Union from the Union President every term.
