We are deeply saddened by the passing of Annas Mazhar, a cherished member of our Students’ Union community, a dedicated student representative, and a close friend to so many.

Annas served with distinction as Disabled Students’ Officer (2018–2019), Chair of Men’s Football, and later as Vice President Student Activities (2019–2020 & 2021-2022). In every role he held, Annas led with genuine care, determination, and a deep belief that students should always be at the heart of the Union’s work.

Living with Muscular Dystrophy, Annas faced challenges that many could not imagine, yet he met them with remarkable strength, positivity, and humour. He inspired those around him not only through what he achieved, but through the way he approached life — always encouraging others, always focused on what could be improved, and always reminding us not to take opportunities, accessibility, or community for granted.

Annas was a passionate advocate for disabled students, working tirelessly to make both the Students’ Union and Aston University more inclusive spaces. His campaigning led to meaningful change, and he played a vital role in educating our community about accessibility and lived experience. Among his lasting contributions was the creation of a series of educational videos on inclusivity and disability awareness, resources that will continue to inform, challenge, and inspire students and staff for many years to come.

Known for his kindness and warmth, Annas had a rare ability to make people feel valued and supported. Whether he was representing students, collaborating with Student Officers and staff, or simply spending time with friends, he brought energy, compassion, and encouragement to every space he entered.

He will be remembered with immense respect, gratitude, and affection. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched. Annas will always remain a valued part of our Union’s story, and he will be greatly missed.
