Aston Sikh Society held their annual Langar on Campus event on campus bringing together 2,000 students and staff.
Last Tuesday, Aston Students' Union was filled with the spirit of community, kindness, and togetherness as Aston Sikh Society hosted its much-loved Langar on Campus event. Over 2,000 students and staff came together to share a delicious free meal, continuing a powerful tradition that first began at Aston in 2005 — making this year the 21st year of Langar on Campus.
Langar is a central practice in Sikhism. Originating over 500 years ago with the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, Langar is the tradition of preparing and serving a free vegetarian meal to everyone, regardless of background, religion, status, or identity. The practice represents the core Sikh values of equality, humility, service (seva), and community, reminding us that everyone should be welcomed and treated with the same respect. Sitting and eating together symbolises the breaking down of social barriers and the importance of unity.
At Aston, this tradition has grown into one of the most anticipated community events of the year. Volunteers from Aston Sikh Society worked tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare and serve the meal, welcoming long queues of students and staff throughout the day. The atmosphere was lively and warm, with people from across the university taking time out of their busy schedules to sit together, share food, and connect with one another.
For many attendees, Langar on Campus is not only an opportunity to enjoy a free, freshly prepared meal, but also a chance to learn about Sikh culture and the values that underpin the tradition. The event highlights the importance of generosity and inclusivity, demonstrating how small acts of service can create a powerful sense of belonging across the university community.
Aston Students’ Union would like to thank Aston Sikh Society and all the volunteers who made this year’s event possible. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment to serving others ensure that Langar on Campus remains a highlight of the Aston calendar and a meaningful reminder of the power of community.
We look forward to seeing this wonderful tradition continue for many years to come!
