FAQs

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

Who can take part in elections?

‘If you’re a student at Aston you can take part in the elections – whether that’s to nominate or vote. You must have opted in to Aston Students' Union membership - although if you haven't, or are unsure, you can check on opt in on MAP. There is no charge to be a member of Aston Students' Union.

For the Full-Time, or Sabbatical roles, you must be prepared to undertake a year's full-time, paid work at Aston Students' Union, Birmingham UK. Students often do this as a Placement role, or in the year immediately after graduating.’

How does it work?

‘As with most elections, to be elected, you'll have to get the highest number of votes! All Aston Students' Union members will be able to submit their vote electronically. The voting system used is called Alternative Voting - you can learn about it here. During that week, you'll try to get as many students as possible to vote for you.’

How do I vote?

When you vote in the elections you can vote for each role and vote in preference. For example, if you like a candidate and want to put them as your first choice you can also put a candidate as your second and third choice.
Watch this video below for more detail on how to vote!

How are the elections run?

‘During the elections there is a nomination period, where students can put themselves or someone else forward as a candidate for a role. At this time no candidate should be campaigning.

Then there is a voting period where all students will be able to vote on which candidate they would like to be elected.

Shortly after, the votes will be counted, and results will be announced.

To ensure the fair running of the elections the Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) will oversee the elections voting period.’
