Let’s Talk About Mental Health 💬

Mental health affects everyone, yet it’s something many people still struggle to talk about openly. Whether you’re a student balancing deadlines and part-time work, or a member of staff juggling responsibilities inside and outside university, navigating everyday life can take a real toll on your wellbeing.

Despite growing awareness, stigma and misunderstanding around mental health continue to make it difficult for many people to reach out for support. Feelings of shame, fear of being judged, or simply not knowing where to turn can stop people from seeking help when they need it most.

Here at Aston, we want to help break that silence.

Understanding the Pressures

There are lots of reasons why someone might find it hard to prioritise their mental wellbeing:

  • Social pressures can make people feel like they always have to “hold it together.”
  • Cultural expectations may discourage open conversations about emotions or seeking support.
  • Academic and workplace demands can pile on stress, especially when combined with financial pressures, personal responsibilities, or big life changes.
  • Loneliness and isolation can make challenges feel even heavier, particularly for those living away from home.

No matter the reason, no one should feel like they have to manage everything on their own.

Creating a Supportive Community

Aston Students’ Union is committed to promoting a culture where talking about mental health is normal and encouraged. Our aim is to help students and staff feel supported, understood, and empowered to seek help when they need it.

Whether it’s through awareness campaigns, wellbeing events, or simply creating space for real conversations, we want everyone in our community to know that support is available.

How You Can Look After Yourself and Others

Small actions can make a big difference in supporting your own mental health, and the wellbeing of the people around you:

  • Check in with friends, classmates, or colleagues. A quick message can mean a lot.
  • Make time for things that help you recharge, whether that’s rest, exercise, or hobbies.
  • Reach out for help if you’re struggling: talking to someone is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • Share resources and support information with others who might need it.
  • Get involved in wellbeing events or initiatives happening on campus.
