Union Council Vote Results: NUS Disaffiliation, Byelaw Updates, and Wellbeing Budget Motion Passed.
Results of the Union Council Term 1 Meeting
On Tuesday, 14th October 2025, Aston Students’ Union held its Union Council Term 1 Meeting, where several key motions were discussed and voted on.
The voting period saw participation from 101 individual voters, resulting in 251 electronic votes.
Motion 1: Updated and Amended Byelaws (UC2025.11)
This motion was proposed by the Students’ Union Executive Officer Team and the Aston Students’ Union Trustee Board.
This motion aimed to update and improve the SU’s Byelaws to reflect current practices, enhance Union Council functionality, and ensure the Union’s governance structures are fit for purpose.
Following the voting period, the results were as follows:
- 79 total votes cast
- The motion reached quorum and received a majority vote in favour.
✅ Outcome: The motion passed.
The changes to the Byelaws will now be implemented in line with the procedures outlined in the governing documents.
Motion 2: NUS Disaffiliation Motion (UC202511)
This motion was proposed by Kaysan Al Salih Saadi (230411261) and seconded by Ayeshah Shahzad (230002036).
This motion called for Aston Students’ Union to disaffiliate from NUS UK, citing concerns regarding representation, value for money, and alignment with the Union’s charitable objectives. It also proposed that the funds previously allocated to affiliation fees be redirected towards student-led campaigns and representational work that will support student needs.
Following the voting period, the results were as follows:
- 94 total votes cast
- The motion reached quorum and received a majority vote in favour.
✅ Outcome: The motion passed.
The Students’ Union will begin the disaffiliation process in accordance with the SU’s governing documents and will issue a public statement outlining the rationale for this decision.
Motion 3: Establishment of Dedicated Wellbeing Budget and Staff Role (UC202511)
This motion was proposed by Gagan Mopuri (President Wellbeing and Inclusion) and Karina Jutlla (220057556).
The motion sought to establish a dedicated annual wellbeing budget of £5,000 and to introduce a permanent wellbeing staff member to ensure the consistent delivery of wellbeing initiatives and long-term support for students.
Following the voting period, the results were as follows:
- 78 total votes cast
- The motion reached quorum and received a majority vote in favour.
✅ Outcome: The motion passed.
The SU will now allocate the designated annual wellbeing budget and ensure appropriate staffing is in place to support wellbeing initiatives.
