Erasmus and Exchange students

In this Section

The accommodation available to you as an exchange student will depend on the duration of your exchange at Aston University. Please read the information below carefully.

Exchange students are split into three categories:
·         Full year (September - June)
·         Teaching Period 1 (September - Jan)
·         Teaching Period 2 (Jan - June)

Full Year Exchange Students

Aston University guarantees campus accommodation to the first 30 full year (September – June) Erasmus and Exchange student applicants, on a first-come first-served basis, who fulfill the criteria set out below:

  • You apply to Aston University as a full time exchange student for the full academic year by the 20th June 2018
  • Aston University have confirmed your application by the 1st July 2018
  • You have applied for accommodation through the online portal by the 10th July 2018

There is a 44 week accommodation only option for Undergraduate applicants or a 51 week catered accommodation contract for Postgraduate. Further details can be found here.

You will be informed whether you have been successful by the 31st July 2018.

If you are unsuccessful please seek alternative accommodation. Birmingham is fortunate in that it boasts a wide variety of accommodation for students that are well connected by bus and rail links. There are a range of options including private student halls, shared houses, flats/studios and Homestay Landlords (where you rent a room with a resident landlord).

Aston Student Homes is the official accommodation support service for Aston students located in the Students’ Union. Please click here to start your accommodation search. We have checked the gas, electrical and energy performance certificates for these properties.

We recommend that you do not transfer or hand over any money until you arrive in the UK and have seen the property/room for yourself. For this reason we suggest that you arrive in the UK early to give yourself time to view properties and areas. Some of our international students prefer to stay in temporary hostel / hotel accommodation while they are looking for somewhere more permanent to live. This helps to prevent any issues or disappointment. For tips on how to avoid rental scams please click here.

We must emphasise that although Aston Student Homes does its best to offer guidance, we are not able to find and place students into rooms or book hotels for them. It is your responsibility to secure accommodation and find out what options may be available to you.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us on 0121 204 4893 / astonstudenthomes@aston.ac.uk

Some of our international students have in the past been able to find short-term student accommodation (for 20 weeks) at Hamcam (Hamstead Campus) who are registered student providers with Aston Student Homes. They are not located on campus but are a short bus ride away. They have limited availability.

Please note, it can be difficult to find a short term let especially for Teaching Period 1 only. This is because most landlords want to let their property for the whole academic year.

Please be aware that if you take on a tenancy for longer than the period you require you will usually be liable for the rent for the whole period unless you can find a suitable replacement. As there is no guarantee that you would find a suitable replacement we cannot recommend this option.

We must emphasise that although here at Aston Student Homes we do our best to offer guidance, we are not able to find and place students into rooms or book hotels for them. It is your responsibility to secure accommodation and find out what options may be available to you.

Please note, it easier to find a short term let for Teaching Period 2 than for Teaching Period 1. This is because some students may need to vacate their accommodation early. It may be worth checking the, ‘Vacating Early - need a student to take over my tenancy,’ section of the Aston Student Homes Message Board.
