Black History Month: Honouring Our Communities
Each October, Black History Month creates an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture, achievements, and contributions of Black people across the UK and around the world. It is a time to reflect on the experiences that have shaped Black communities, recognise the contributions that have helped shape wider society, and create space for stories and perspectives that have not always received the recognition they deserve.
This year’s theme, “Honouring Our Communities”, invites us to think about the meaning of community and the people who help to create it. Communities are shaped by shared histories, experiences, relationships, and a sense of belonging. For generations, Black communities have created spaces where culture and identity can be celebrated, knowledge can be passed between generations, and people can support and learn from one another. Honouring these communities means recognising not only the challenges they have faced, but also the strength, creativity, care, and connection that have helped them grow and thrive.
It also means looking beyond well-known individuals and recognising the collective contribution of communities themselves. Much of Black history can be found in everyday experiences: in families and friendships, in local organisations and places of worship, in cultural traditions, and in the people who have quietly created opportunities for others. These stories help us understand that history is not only something that happened in the past. It continues to influence the communities we live in and the society we are part of today.
Birmingham provides a particularly meaningful place to explore this history. The city has a long and significant Black history, shaped by generations of people who have made Birmingham their home and contributed to its cultural and social life. Across the city, Black communities have helped create spaces of belonging and have played an important role in shaping the identity of Birmingham. Throughout October, there will be opportunities to learn more about these histories and experiences and to connect with the communities that continue to shape the city today.

For students, Black History Month is an opportunity to look more closely at the communities around us and consider the different histories and experiences that have shaped our society. While October provides a dedicated opportunity to celebrate and reflect, honouring our communities is something we can continue throughout the year. Building inclusive spaces, celebrating diverse voices, supporting one another, and recognising the contributions of Black communities are ongoing commitments.
So this October, take the opportunity to connect, learn, celebrate, and reflect. Discover the stories within your own community, listen to voices you may not have heard before, and join us in honouring the people, histories, cultures, and connections that make our communities stronger.
