As we hand over The Green, we look back on 45 years of student-led accommodation that became a first home, a community, and a lasting legacy for thousands of Aston students.

Celebrating the End of an Era for Student-Led Accommodation
This week marks the end of an era for Aston Students’ Union.
After years of being proudly managed by ASU, it is with a heavy heart that The Green will officially be handed over to Midland Heart. While this transition brings change, it also gives us the chance to look back on something genuinely special, a student accommodation project that put students first, every single time.
Since opening, The Green has been more than just a place to live. It has been a student-led success story, built around affordability, community, and value for money. Over its lifetime, ASU has supported around 6,750 students, 150 residents each year for 45 years, helping to save students millions of pounds in accommodation costs compared to the private market.
For many, The Green was their first taste of independent living. Late-night kitchen chats, exam-season stress, lifelong friendships, and memories that still get talked about years later. It wasn’t flashy or luxurious, but it was real, accessible, and designed with students at its heart.
Running The Green has allowed Aston Students’ Union to offer what was widely regarded as some of the best-value student accommodation, at a time when housing costs continue to rise across the sector. That is something we are incredibly proud of.
When alumni come back to visit campus, it is often those who lived at The Green who have the best stories to tell, stories that capture the spirit, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments that made this place truly unique.
As we prepare to hand over the keys, we want to say thank you to every student who lived here, every staff member who supported, and the wardens who helped make The Green what it was. You made it special.
While we no longer run The Green, Aston Student Advice remains available for residents who may still have queries or need support, and we are always here for students living there. Learn more here.
We would like to reflect with enormous pride in what has been achieved and deep appreciation for everyone who played a part in its story. The impact of The Green will continue to be felt through the thousands of students who have called it home.
The Green’s place in Aston Students’ Union history is secure, and its legacy will remain an important part of Aston’s story! 💚
