World Mental Health Day 2026
How You Can Feel Better and Get More from Student Life
Looking after your mental wellbeing is just as important as caring for your physical health. Student life can be fast-paced, but small, intentional actions can make a big difference.
This World Mental Health Day, here are five simple ways to feel more positive, connected, and ready to make the most of university life.

Connect With Others
Human connection is fundamental to wellbeing. Building and maintaining relationships, whether with friends, peers, or new acquaintances, can help you feel supported, valued, and more fulfilled.
Even if you're more introverted, reaching out in small ways can still have a big impact!
Striking up a conversation with someone new in a lecture, reconnecting with an old friend via message, or simply making time to catch up in person or online are great starting points. And if you're looking to meet people with similar interests, the SU offers a variety of ways to connect! From joining clubs and societies to attending SU events there's something for everyone! And if you ever need a bit of extra support, our free Student Advice Service is always here to help.

Get Active
Exercise is a proven mood-booster. It can reduce stress, improve sleep, and increase energy levels — but it doesn’t require a rigid gym routine!
Being active can be as simple as taking a walk between lectures, dancing in your room, or stretching during study breaks.
The SU is here to support your physical wellbeing with a variety of ways to stay active. You can join one of the SU’s sports teams or take part in casual fitness classes on campus. Sport Aston also offers regular social sport sessions, making it easy to get moving in a fun and relaxed setting. Whatever your fitness level or experience, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Embrace Mindfulness
Mindfulness, the act of being present and aware, helps us manage stress and appreciate everyday moments.
In the rush of student life, it’s easy to go into autopilot, but pausing to really notice your surroundings or your feelings can help ground you.
Taking time to slow down and be present — whether that means stepping away from your screen, jotting down things you're grateful for, or simply focusing on your breathing — can really help boost your mental wellbeing.
To support you, the SU offers a Digital Wellbeing Hub, along with practical initiatives like wellbeing packages and free breakfast events. The university also offers a wide range of wellbeing services, including access to mental health support, counselling, and tailored resources designed to support your overall wellbeing.

Keep Learning
Learning something new gives you a sense of progress and purpose.
This doesn’t have to mean extra academic pressure; it could be picking up a new hobby, trying a craft, reading something outside your course, or joining a student-led group!
The SU offers a range of opportunities to learn in fun, informal ways — including fun events, volunteering roles, and creative societies. You can challenge yourself while connecting with others and gaining new perspectives!

Give Back
Helping others is a powerful way to lift your own wellbeing.
Whether it’s through small acts of kindness or organised volunteering, giving your time or energy can help build stronger relationships and a deeper sense of community.
You might start by offering support to a friend, or simply getting involved in activities that matter to you. The SU offers plenty of opportunities to give back and make a difference, including volunteering schemes and participating in Union Council, where students can have a real say in shaping and improving the student experience for everyone.
