What is RAG?

Aston RAG (Raise and Give) is a part of the Students’ Union that actively seeks to raise money for charitable causes for local, national and international charities. It’s completely student-led, helping to bring people together to fundraise for good causes, organising events and challenges.

As well as running our own events, we help clubs and societies to fundraise on behalf of RAG.

How to Get Involved?

There are loads of different ways to get involved with Aston RAG. It’s a great way to meet new people, gain new skills and experience and it looks great on your CV! You can get involved by:

Join a Challenge

Aston RAG put on three big challenges, one each term. Among other things, we’re looking at doing a RAG Raid and the 3 Peaks Challenge. If you’re interested email Union.rago@aston.ac.uk

Volunteer

RAG is not always about giving money, giving time is just as important. Aston RAG will provide plenty of opportunities to volunteer at RAG events as well as opportunities to volunteer at one-off charitable events.

Events

The best way to get involved is coming along to our events and join in with fundraising. Details of our events can be found on Facebook and Twitter and also in the events section on the Aston Students’ Union website.

Charities

Our 3 chosen charities for this year are:

Helping Birmingham’s Homeless

Helping Birmingham’s Homeless is a group of volunteers made up of staff and students from Aston University that join The Red Bag Co every Sunday evening on homeless outreach. This involves walking around the city centre providing rough sleepers with food, drinks, clothing, toiletries and bedding, as well as offering emotional and practical support. We have been active since October 2015 and have seen a drastic rise in the number of rough sleepers in the city centre during this time. We are increasingly seeing more and more young people forced to sleep on the streets, with no food and little clothing and bedding. You can help in three ways, by donating your time, needed items or money.

Macmillan Cancer

Macmillan Cancer is the national charity that provides support, advocacy and information about cancer. The charity supports all people with many different types of cancer providing emotional and practical support from the moment you are diagnosed.

Papyrus Suicide Prevention for Young People is a national charity that delivers awareness training and provides confidential support. Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people, male and female, under 35 in the UK. Papyrus has been involved with Aston University in the past by providing training for staff. The charity carries out vital, relevant and amazing work for young people.
