Whoaaa, it's almost a year since we went into lockdown, we know we didn't get everything right, but overall, we think we did a decent job and wanted to share with you the amazing things our students and your SU has achieved over the last Covid-19 year.

2020 March - Image 2020 March - Breaking a World - Record - Aston Panthers along with your Students’ Union and VP Welfare 2019-20 achieved the longest like of sanitary pads and broke a Guinness World Record! Due to the campaign ‘Never Ovary-Acting’ raising awareness for period poverty, we were able to use 20,320 pads for a line length of 1888.9 metres. 2020 September - Image 2020 September - Our First Ever Virtual Fair - We still tried to give new and existing students a chance to meet like-minded people and make new friends in clubs and societies. Our virtual Clubs and Socs fair during Welcome Week had approximately 1600 people attend by accessing the virtual interactive platform. 2020 October - Image 2020 October - You continuing to inspire connections - You still managed to inspire others to join clubs and societies, making new friends and getting involved, with 1500 being recruited despite lockdown. We know finding others with similar interests to yourself has been very different this year, but you made the most of it. 2020 November - Image 2020 November - Raising Awareness of Hidden Disabilities - After his own experience, your VP Student Activities created a campaign for hidden disabilities. This gave students a platform to talk about these important issues. These same students were able to be matched up to support services available on campus and we filmed videos sharing stories and breaking taboos. 2021 March - Image 2021 March - Digital Elections 2021 July - Image 2021 July - Hello... 2021 December - Image 2021 December - 'YESSS!'
2020 March - Moving the ARC Online - After the announcement of national lockdown we moved our Advice and Representation Centre online so that it could continue to deliver and support students every day. 2020 March - Image 2020 September - Our Partnership With Native for Welcome Week - Welcome week was very different in 2020, with no physical events. So we partnered with Native to create a bespoke platform with a variety of virtual packages and online events to provide students with opportunities to meet others. 2020 September - Image 2020 October - You telling us that sustainability matters - With 354 students completing our sustainability survey, your results will help inform University and Union policy over the next 12 months. You told us officially that sustainability at Aston matters to you. 2020 October - Image 2020 November - Us asking why the curriculum is white - Over 250 students completed the ‘Why Is My Curriculum White’ survey. With this response, we are able to develop an SU policy on your opinion of the curriculum, and lobby this over the coming months. April 2020 - Image April 2020 - Lobbying the Uni for a Non-Detriment Policy - To ensure the pandemic does not negatively impact student’s academic achievements we worked tirelessly for the first few weeks of lockdown, supporting the university when communicating the Non-Detriment Policy. 2020 September - Image 2020 September - Helping you 'Get ready for the year' - With the current climate, we wanted to help you face the academic year with a campaign full of helpful advice, tips and resources. So we released a set of social media posts with help from Jawad, your VP Education. 2020 October - Image 2020 October - The stance on Black Lives Matter - We made our most comprehensive Black History Month yet, with icons, recipes, talks, promoting businesses, charity days and petitions. We gave a voice to our students and staff about this incredibly important global campaign with our event online viewed over 2000 times. We also made an awareness page on our website. 2020 December - Image 2020 December - Representing your academic interest at Union Senate - We invited the University to the first online Union Senate meeting, and we had over 70 engaged student reps holding them to account, and ensuring the Non-Detriment Policy remains for the current academic year 2021. 2021 April - Image 2021 April - Sport was back! 2021 September - Image 2021 September - New Lounge
2020 April - Announcing Academic Awards Digitally - We received over 180 nominations that were inspired by the amazing work across campus. We recognised the achievements of all the student reps and announced the winners on a live video. 2020 April - Image 2020 September - Making our building COVID compliant - We made our award winning building COVID-19 compliant in the hope we could open for at least part of the time in term one. We created additional learning spaces for students on campus, socially distanced our furniture and made videos for our commercial services on how to stay safe using the facilities. 2020 September - Image 2020 October - Letting us know how you feel in Speak Week - Speak Week was a little bit longer this year, and with your help we are able to push change within the University in the interest of bettering your academic experience. Thank you for the 400 responses that will help us feed back your voice. 2020 October - Image 2020 January - You let your voices be heard and gave us our largest response ever on our SU yearly survey, with 1,054 responses. Once we have analysed all the data, this will inform us where to go next, what to improve on, and what you are telling us we need to do more of. 2020 May - Image 2020 May - Amazing Engagement In Our Aston SU Awards - With over 500 nominations from clubs and societies we helped students to remember all the brilliant things that they should be proud of and we recognise the individuals putting their all into them. We experienced thousands of views online. 2020 September - Image 2020 September - Signing 330 Student Reps This Year - We had 330 student reps sign up this year to represent your academic interests. With this, came moving our training to online delivery, having over 250 students engage with this method. We were equipped to provide our student leaders with the skills to navigate the first term, and now onto the second! 2020 October - Image 2020 October - Our best attended Union Council to date - Thanks to you, there was a huge attendance to our first Union Council of the year, with over 150 students. A great milestone, especially with it being our first virtual attempt hosting these councils and we’ve been successful ever since! 2021 January - Image 2021 January - Lockdown Fears and Accommodation Fees - With the advent of another lockdown, we mobilised the student voice to raise the issue of accommodation fees, oveer 30 providers were contacted and many offered reduced rent for students 2021 June - Image 2021 June - Award Winners 2021 October - Image BHM and Aston Villa
2020 Since July - Boosting Our International Buddy Scheme Numbers - We had a record breaking amount of students sign up for the International Buddy Scheme, with over 450 sign ups. Our Welfare Officer has organised loads of fun virtual events so far for them, with no signs of slowing down yet! 2020 Since July - Image 2020 October - US Delivering Support Parcels To You - We distributed over 100 emergency food parcels to let you know we were thinking of you, whilst still on campus during this time. Your VP Welfare also created period parcels to students who needed them, to help combat period poverty and deliver those essentials. We always have students wellbeing in mind. 2020 October- Image 2020 November - Us recognising graduate achievement with a wall art - Graduates during 2020 are a credit to themselves, and make everyone at Aston so proud. So to recognise your achievements, and the struggle to get where you are now, we designed a wall art to reflect your resilient spirit. 2020 November - Image 2021 February - DIGITAL ONLY ELECTIONS - We once again allowed a local charity back into the building to run its foodbank for the local community. 2021 February - Image 2021 June - 'What a year to be an officer' 2021 June - Image 2021 November - 'And the oscar goes to...' 2021 November - Image
