Impact

Whoaaa, it's almost a year since we went into lockdown, we know we didn't get everything right, but overall, we think we did a decent job and wanted to share with you the amazing things our students and your SU has achieved over the last Covid-19 year.

2020 March - Image 2020 March - Breaking a World - Record - Aston Panthers along with your Students’ Union and VP Welfare 2019-20 achieved the longest like of sanitary pads and broke a Guinness World Record! Due to the campaign ‘Never Ovary-Acting’ raising awareness for period poverty, we were able to use 20,320 pads for a line length of 1888.9 metres. 2020 September - Image 2020 September - Our First Ever Virtual Fair - We still tried to give new and existing students a chance to meet like-minded people and make new friends in clubs and societies. Our virtual Clubs and Socs fair during Welcome Week had approximately 1600 people attend by accessing the virtual interactive platform. 2020 October - Image 2020 October - You continuing to inspire connections - You still managed to inspire others to join clubs and societies, making new friends and getting involved, with 1500 being recruited despite lockdown. We know finding others with similar interests to yourself has been very different this year, but you made the most of it.
2020 March - Moving the ARC Online - After the announcement of national lockdown we moved our Advice and Representation Centre online so that it could continue to deliver and support students every day. 2020 March - Image 2020 September - Our Partnership With Native for Welcome Week - Welcome week was very different in 2020, with no physical events. So we partnered with Native to create a bespoke platform with a variety of virtual packages and online events to provide students with opportunities to meet others. 2020 September - Image 2020 October - You telling us that sustainability matters - With 354 students completing our sustainability survey, your results will help inform University and Union policy over the next 12 months. You told us officially that sustainability at Aston matters to you. 2020 October - Image 2020 November - Raising Awareness of Hidden Disabilities - After his own experience, your VP Student Activities created a campaign for hidden disabilities. This gave students a platform to talk about these important issues. These same students were able to be matched up to support services available on campus and we filmed videos sharing stories and breaking taboos. 2020 November - Image

So we released a set of social media posts with help from Jawad, your VP Education. 2020 October - Image 2020 October - The stance on Black Lives Matter - We made our most comprehensive Black History Month yet, with icons, recipes, talks, promoting businesses, charity days and petitions. With this response, we are able to develop an SU policy on your opinion of the curriculum, and lobby this over the coming months. We will work with Aston University to decolonise the curriculum and close the attainment gap.
