Aston Chocolate Society aims to bring awareness to the continuing issue of slavery in the Cocoa trade industry.

Cocoa being associated with child and slave labour is still too low. Big Chocolate companies have the power to eradicate this issue but chose not to.

As consumers we have a right and an opportunity to pressure them into producing slave-free chocolate by making better decisions, for example choosing alternatives like Fairtrade certified brands. By challenger brands imputing schemes like a Premium, farmers can send their children to school and not to the farm to do illegal child labour.

Our society wants to teach, inspire, and motivate active thoughts to the students of Aston, that there is a problem, it does exist, but there is also a solution!

       Our Activities include:

  • Taste-testing new Fairtrade brands – A chance to socially engage
  • Quizes and challenges – participating in games to win chocolate prizes
  • Visiting independent and Charity shops in Birmingham - finding ethically sourced chocolate
  • Spreading awareness - on campus and online
  • Recommending ethically sourced brands
  • Participating in watch parties – Films and documentaries
